On This Day – Vale End Cemetery

Vale End Cemetery

Looking Back to October 26, 2018

The “Veil Thins” as we approach Halloween (Samhain) and I can think of no better time to visit some of the older graveyards. Vale End Cemetery in Wilton, NH is considered by some as being a haunted cemetery, and that is where I visited on this day in 2018.

Grave of Mary “Polly” Ritter Spalding

I headed first to the grave of Mary Ritter Spalding who supposedly haunts the area and appears as a blue apparition. So far I’ve been disappointed. It is sad to see that her gravestone has been desecrated as some of the other ones have been. Visitors should be respectful when visiting.

Even though I didn’t encounter any ghosts, this cemetery has a nice quiet vibe to it. It is located on a hill on a back road with very little traffic. I spent a fair amount of time just sitting around enjoying the quiet. I had one more stop to make while I was in Wilton, a trip to Garwin Fall just a short drive from the cemetery.

Garwin Falls
Garwin Falls, Wilton, NH – October 26, 2018

This was my favorite waterfall in the area. I use the past tense because now (2023) the area is closed to the public. A sign at the gate warns of imprisonment for trespassing. I can only guess that someone got hurt and we must all pay for their carelessness. It is a dangerous place, an entire hillside of cascading water. It would be stupid to climb on those wet rocks but that is how it goes. I was just happy to enjoy it when it was legal. This photo was a typical long exposure shot that is the norm for waterfalls, but I also made a video to show the falls in all their glory. Enjoy.
