The Daily Photos for April 4, 2024

The Daily Picture Theme is #Stale

I participate in a photography challenge on Spoutible, a social media site that I joined when I left Twitter. A hashtagged theme is posted each day from the account of Daily Picture Theme which describes itself as “The Big Photo Album of Our Community.” Usually it is simple task to find a photo to pair with a theme but presented a challenge. I could only think of stale bread, stale air and stale beer. Once again our local recycling center provided a subject for this theme. When I was volunteering at the center in March of 2018, someone brought in a bottle of Harvard Export Beer. I’m guessing it might be a 1940s vintage. I would guess that it is pretty stale by now.

On This Day – April 4th (2020)

I type this in the middle of a Nor-easter. Hopefully the power will remain on long enough so I can publish it. The weather was a lot nicer two years ago on this date. I took a ride to Jaffrey and Peterborough to take some photos. My first stop was a decaying trestle bridge in Jaffrey. Decaying infrastructure is a great subject for photographers.

Noone Falls

There is a wonderful waterfall in Peterborough behind the Kogetsu Restaurant. I wanted to photograph it using a computational feature on my camera. Typically waterfalls are photographed with long exposures and neutral density filters. This yields a pleasant blurred water effect. My Olympus has a built in neutral density filter and does some kind of magic to allow handheld photos. I suspect it does a series of photos and combines them mathematically. I also took one with a high shutter speed to capture the droplets.

Stoneworks

There are a number of small stone houses on a hillside across the street from Noone Falls. It is too dangerous to photograph them from the street, but I was able to photograph some of them from the parking lot. I understand that they were made by a stone mason that lives on the property. There is a great amount of detail and whimsy in his creations. Sad that they are so inaccessible.

Nor-easter

It’s really blowing outside. I was hoping we were done with winter, but it is what it is. I’m grateful that I had many pine trees removed before this storm, especially the one that dropped a huge branch that brushed against the garage and did some damage. The yard is full of dark-eyed juncos and the feeder tube will need to refilled again. Stay safe and thanks for stopping in.
