December 19, 2023 (Tuesday)

Yesterday as I was writing my journal entry I was reporting that nothing much had happened. Shortly after there was a tremendous crash and the entire house shook. Half of a pine tree had broken off and crashed into the yard, grazing the garage. Bits of pine branches were tossed over the breezeway roof. If it had fallen a little more to the south it would have hit the room where I was sitting. This morning I got a good look at the mayhem.

I was under the impression that the tree had fallen as a results of the storm, but it appears that there was rot where the tree branched. I won’t know for certain until I cut away the base of the fallen tree. Clearing this mess is going to be quite a chore.

Farouters Meeting

The “Farouters” are a men’s group that meet for lunch twice a month. We had the last meeting of 2023 and had a lively discussion about wildlife, nature trails, sports, Hampshire School, Taylor Swift, forestry and Christmas cookies. We all left with Christmas cookies that Paul Willis had baked. A great way to end the year.

Daily Picture Theme – #Sense

I participate in a daily picture challenge on the social media site Spoutible. Everyday there is a different subject announced as a Daily Picture Theme. I select an appropriate  photo from my collection to share. The theme today is #Sense. At first I was looking for a photo that would define sense as becoming aware. Cats seem be in a constant state of sensing. However, instead I chose the meaning of the word as one of the senses, the sense of smell. One of my favorite scents is the Rosa rugosa.

Rosa Rugosa (with spider)
If you look carefully at the upper flower you can see that a flower spider (Misumena vatia) has captured a small wasp.
