On This Day – Wimped Out

Clearing the driveway of snow

December 4, 2023 (Monday)

There was a coating of frozen slush this morning and I decided to skip Tai Chi. I wimped out with my worn summer tires. Later this week I get the winter tires and I should be in better shape. We definitely are doing better than we did in 2019. The featured photo for this post was taken four years ago during the “bomb cyclone” called Ezekiel.

MOHS Candidate (again)

John with bandaged right ear
Bandaged ear post MOHS surgery for basal cell carcinoma

I got my biopsy report about a spot on my nose as well as a bill for $297. Another case of basal cell carcinoma for me. This will be my third case. All those years of mowing the lawn and enjoying the sunshine are taking their toll on this melanin challenged male. If you think I look ridiculous with the bandaged ear, imagine how silly the nose will look. At least this won’t happen till February next year.

Bubble Walk

I walked the perimeter track at the Bubble before grocery shopping. I decided I would do three miles or one hour in duration, which ever came first. My watch informed me that it was a moderate walk. It felt harder than that. At least I was protect from UV rays.

Daily Picture Theme

Searching for downed pilots

I was assigned to the Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 1 (HC-1) at the Naval Air Station at Ream Field Imperial Beach, CA. Our mission was to fly “plane guard” operations for the aircraft carrier USS Bon Homme Richard at Yankee Station. One name for the squadron was “fleet angels”.

Our helicopters were in the air during flights from the carrier. If a plane went down, our crews would search for them and perform a rescue. This is a photo of a rescue training exercise.

    1. Yes thanks to Doctor Mohs. His technique developed in the 1930s is still considered the best treatment. I only wish they had invented sun screening agents when I was young when the damage was done,
