Happy Hardware

Wednesday – The Plumbing Ordeal

It wasn’t as cold this morning and it warmed up nicely. Unfortunately I didn’t have time to take a cardio walk. I was on a plumbing adventure. I had already made several trips to our local “Happy Hardware” store and one excursion to Belletetes, a home improvement store. I was unhappy with their selection of replacement kitchen drains, but did spend $30 on a dremel lock cutting kit. I know that will be the perfect tool to have when the other drain rots away. I’ll need it cut off the retaining nut.

F.W. Webb Plumbing Supply

No more fooling around. Today I went shopping where the pros go. I parked my plug-in hybrid alongside all the plumbing trucks. I left with a much nicer kitchen drain packaged in a cardboard box, not a blister pack. I actually bought two of them because it is a double sink and the other drain is also 32 years old. The clock is ticking. This item oozes quality.

Better Quality

I left with a number of items, but due to my inexperience only the drain and plumbers putty were needed. The plastic tubing was of the wrong type, the drain removal tool was unnecessary and an expensive tub of solder flux was a mistake because didn’t read the fine print. I had asked for RectorSeal T Plus 2 .

Fine Print
I should have read the fine print, this was a $17.95 mistake, I don’t need solder flux, the right stuff is coming via Amazon.

If you are keeping a tally, you probably will note that I probably have spent more on supplies than an actual service call to a qualified plumber. However I was too far into the project. I assembled what I had and it almost works. Just requires a pan underneath to catch the dripping water. However it is intermittent. It only leaks when I use the sink.

This Saturday

I’ll return the solder flux tomorrow to get my $17.95 back. This Saturday I’ll get my T plus 2 pipe sealant and a flexible drain pipe instead of my collections of rigid pipes. Both items are coming from Amazon. I am really excited about the T Plus 2 which is PTFE enriched. I plan to use it as a hand cream as well as a thread sealant.

RectorSeal T Plus 2 is a non-hardening thread sealant containing PTFE plus synthetic fibers. Fibers dispersed in a resinous base combined with inert mineral fillers provide maximum sealing performance.

Features PTFE enriched
For use with potable water (hot or cold)
Lead free and contains no other metals
Lubricates and protects threads
Formulated for plastic and metal pipe

The critics have some comments about the EasyDrain Expandable Flexible P-Trap Pipe 1-1/2″ (White) | Kitchen Sink, Garbage Disposal & Shampoo Bowls which will soon be a part of my project.

Customers say
Customers like the ease of installation using the hose pipe fitting. They mention that it is easy to install and works well. Customers also like the flexibility. However, some customers have reported that the product is flimsy and seems to be very cheaply made.

Amazon summation of product

I’ll make my own determination about the quality of this product. In the interim I will search for a good plumber.
