I just returned two packages of Romaine Lettuce grown in Salinas, CA after reading of another recall due to E. Coli contamination. So much for trying to be healthy. There was no recall of the ice cream bars in my freezer or the bag of potato chips. Why is that the case?

Note the the package clearly states “Wash before eating”. I saw that after I had consumed half the package on the right. I should have known better. I should have followed the example of my Aunt Adeline.

My Aunt Adeline would make coleslaw salad during the holidays. She would spend what seemed like hours carefully scrubbing the cabbage and carrots. We thought it was odd, but in reality she was on to something.

My Aunt collected news clippings on health topics, Laetrile studies, the Trilateral Commission, the Yalta Conference, the Virgin Mary visions of Veronica Lueken, and many other interesting things. She worked on this research for her entire life. It made for some interesting conversations and some memorable mail. She sent me some information about the communist folk music camps run by Pete Seeger at the time I was trying to learn the banjo using his book.

Mostly she believed that there was a group of powerful men that controlled the world’s economy. It is the same theme we hear echoed from some presidential candidates. My brother-in-law had some “Adeline Was Right!” bumper stickers printed. She was certainly right about the importance of washing vegetables.
