Here is the straight poop about kitty litter. The litter must do a good job of dealing with liquid waste. For years I’ve been using clumping litter. In theory the waste reacts with the litter and forms hard clumps which can easily be scooped up. However the reality is that many times it forms a cement-like slurry which must be scraped from the litter box.
I’ve tried crystal non-clumping litters with mixed results. Most of these are variants of silica gel or some natural minerals. They are supposed to last a month. I have not tried this particular brand.
Finally I decided to use wood pellets, a cheap and biodegradable product available at Tractor Supply Company.
It is also available at Walmart and grocery stores at a slightly higher price.
The dry pellets absorb the liquid and turn into sawdust which can be sifted out. I was able to convince my cat to use this by spreading the old litter on top of the pellets. I learned later that our local cat shelter uses the same product.
