Mount Watatic is located at the southern end of the Wapack Range of mountains. Our New Ipswich walking group hiked it on a warm October afternoon. We were following a long tradition of climbers dating back at least to the late 1800s.
We were a bit more informal on our hike.
Watatic has a bald summit with a 360 degree view of the surrounding hills and mountains. On a clear day, the city of Boston can be seen. I fidgeted with an app to identify the hills.
It was nice to have a breeze at the summit while we enjoyed the view.
I met a reptile friend on the trail. I tried several times to get a good photo but he/she kept striking at me which made it hard to focus.
We encountered some hikers which had descended the wrong trail. One complained about lack of signage. However this is what we saw on the summit.
In conclusion, this Mountain lives up to its 2010 reputation as one of the “1000 Great Places in Massachusetts”.
