Smith’s Blueberries is located in New Ipswich, NH. It is been in operation since 1975, but today marked my first visit, a foolish oversight.
I had a very nice chat with Lorraine Rodier about blueberry culture and her ideas for the farm. We sat on a newly constructed farm shed overlooking the blueberry bushes. A number of mothers and children were picking as we spoke.
The farm uses silvopasture practices to grow the blueberries. Ducks roam between the bushes picking at low hanging fruit and fallen fruit. The ducks keep the ground clean of rotting fruit which can harbor pests and disease.
Some folks arrived from the USDA to discuss the operations of the farm and as a result, I took my leave with a carton of fresh blueberries. I definitely will be returning.
