Amazon lists 343 items as squirrel proof feeders. These products are mislabeled. The proper term is squirrel entertainment feeders. I have tried every type of feeder, baffle and deterrent and in each case Mr. Squirrel always wins.
I found a “squirrel proof” feeder at the New Ipswich Green Center. It has a spring loaded perch which closes the seed ports when a large animal steps on it.
A lightweight small red squirrel had no problem chowing down at the feeder.
The gray squirrel used brute force to push up the cover and crawl inside. I attempted to make that more difficult by add clips to the support wire but in this case, the squirrel succeeded.
I found a “bird cage” type feeder at the Green Center which has proved to be somewhat squirrel proof. It has been tested thoroughly by our forest friends.
However it was a different story for the Red Squirrel.
This “squirrel proof” feeder also came from the Green Center and was quite effective. The weight of the animal closed the seed ports. Mr. Squirrel found if he hung upside down he could grab some seed. Later he lifted it and dropped to the ground breaking off some of the metal perches.

You are, no doubt, familiar with the essential guidebook in this matter, “Outwitting Squirrels: 101 Cunning Stratagems to Reduce Dramatically the Egregious Misappropriation of Seed from Your Birdfeeder by Squirrels” by Bill Adler, Jr. It is truly THE definitive Guide!
Thanks, I was unaware of this book. I ‘m happy to see that others have thought about this issue.
Howdy would you mind sharing which blog platform you’re working with?
I’m looking to start my own blog soon but I’m having a difficult time deciding between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal.
The reason I ask is because your design and style seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something unique.
P.S Sorry for being off-topic but I had to ask!
WordPress with Neve theme (free version)
Hmm is anyone else encountering problems with the images on this blog loading?
I’m trying to find out if its a problem on my end or if it’s the blog.
Any responses would be greatly appreciated.
Probably on my end. Photos are hosted on Flickr and served via a plugin. Anything breaking on the chain can prevent the photos from loading.
Hey there this is kind of of off topic but I was wondering if
blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with HTML.
I’m starting a blog soon but have no coding experience so I wanted to
get advice from someone with experience. Any help would be enormously
appreciated!
WordPress uses Gutenberg blocks, it is WYSIWYG and easy to use
Nicely put, With thanks!
