We were off to a good start this first day of March in 2023. The snow stopped, the sun was warm and my driveway was mostly clear. I heard chickadees singing their “Sweetie” spring song. However it has clouded over with a forecast of more snow, ugh! Here is a look back at some photos taken “on this day”.
Mar 1, 2020 – Relay Race
I spent some time on this day taking closeups of electro-mechanical devices. I’ve had some of the relays for over 50 years. I cannot part with them because they look so damn cool. I would assume that most electrical switching is now done by solid state devices but back in the day relays did the work,
This computer fan and cooling fins looks like a modern sculpture. Basically I am a hardware geek who finds beauty in such things.
Mar 1, 2018 – Then and Now
I see a lot of historical photos in my role as the author of the New Ipswich Historical Society newsletter. in some cases I travel around town looking to recreated the vantage point of the historical photo. Such was the case for this photo taken on what was then School Street but now is known as Page Hill Road.
Now (March 1, 2018)
This is a view down Page Hill road toward the center of Smithville.
Then (Circa 1916)
Mar 1, 2016 – George Lawrence retires
New Ipswich selectman George Lawrence announced his retirement at Candidates Night on this date. George held this office for many years. He had the patience and wit needed for small town political office.
Mar 1, 2014 – John Wayne
I spotted this at a friend’s house and knew it deserved a photo.
However this is not a product I would purchase since it is ineffective. Note that it states right on the wrapper that it “doesn’t take crap off anyone”.

I guess it is hereditary (from Pop) like John I appreciate well made tools and mechanisms. I have several (7) sewing machines and my most recent is a 1850’s Wilcox and Gibbs vintage machine that does not have a bobbin – has a clever looping mechanism and creates a chain stitch- it is a JOY to operate. They don’t make them like they used to! (would like to post a picture but don’t see how to do that here)
john your pictures of relays….very cool, susan – i love your thoughts on sewing machines – i loved sewing way back when…made a formal dress for my mom, the dress my sister wore to the bangaladesh concert and my sr prom dress
