Feb 18, 2021 – Squirrel survivor

All of my bird feeders are raided by squirrels. I’m used to seeing them. I noticed that this poor guy had been wounded. I wonder if he fought off a hawk. He had no problem eating from the suet cake.

Feb 18, 2016 – Yellow Clivia (Clivia miniata var ‘Citrina’)

At one time the yellow variation of the Clivia miniata plant was rare. However with cloning it is fairly common. A friend gave me a plant which reliably blooms in fall. However in 2016 it decided to bloom in February.

Feb 18, 2013 – Caturday

I’m posting this on a Saturday which is known in the online photo universe as #Caturday. I took this photo of Blackie having a drink from the self-filling water bowl. I was watching Blackie for friends who were on vacation. He spent most of his time in the barn but took this opportunity to stop in the house for a quick drink.

Feb 18, 2012 – A lobster that glows in the dark

This was an interesting experience. I had purchased a cooked lobster and fish from our supermarket for dinner. My wife had the lobster, I had the fish. I left the lobster shells in a pan with plans to bring them to the compost the next morning. When I turned out the lights to go to bed, I was surprised to see that the shards of lobster meat were glowing with an eerie green light.

Lobsters are scavengers. I have no doubt that this one had a meal of some kind of bioluminescent creature. My wife was fine. She even seemed to have a healthy glow about her.

Feb 18, 2011 – Pysanka Egg

I attended a display of painted Easter Eggs at the Jaffrey Civic Center in 2011. I spoke with artist Susie Choate who explained the process she used to etch this egg with hydrochloric acid.

Feb 18, 2009 – Spring is in the air

Inside the house new fronds were growing on my Cycad. The houseplants sense that the season is changing.

Outside the sap is beginning to run. A maple flavored icicle formed on a cut branch of a sugar maple tree.
