Microsoft “One Drive” a cautionary tale
One should never do anything impulsively on the computer without a complete understanding of the consequences. I saw a red check mark on my OneDrive “Cloud”. There was some verbiage about a few files in a directory named 2048px that I had created. I knew I had no need of it so I assumed it would okay to delete the directory. The message implied that it would be okay and I didn’t bother to investigate what was going to happen.
Files started to disappear, not one or two but many files. Photographs disappearing. I panicked and was able to abort the process. Then I wondered what was lost. Spent an inordinate amount of time figuring how to restore files from Carbonite, the backup service I use. A total restore would take weeks, but I didn’t need it all just what was lost. The riddle is that you don’t know what is lost if you don’t have a record of what you had to begin with.
My “solution” was to restore photo directories from Carbonite and do some serious pruning of uninteresting and duplicate photos. Easy to get into trouble, painful to get out.
Generator On Schedule
Wednesday morning at 10:00 the backup generator fired up and ran for 20 minutes, just as it was supposed to do. Felt happier about that than my deleted photos.
Tethered shooting
It was a week for being a geek. I’ve been wanting to explore the possibility of photographing birds remotely. After failing to get the WiFi to work with the camera, I discovered that a USB cable and the program OM Capture allows me to operate the camera from a laptop. I can see this as a great boon for macro-photography, something I hope to explore this winter. Stay tuned.
Substack Publications
As some people know, My Strange Life is not my only online publication. I post a daily Substack Newsletter for the New Ipswich Historical Society. In addition I have created a personal Substack Newsletter named Improves with Age which I was using for daily photo themes. This platform is easier to use than WordPress and is better suited for short articles. I’ve decided to branch out a bit and include more than photo themes. This week I wrote a bit about Mother Hubbard’s Ladle here in New Ipswich (NH).
2024 New Ipswich Autumn Festival
Some photos from the 2024 New ipswich Autumn Festival held at Memorial Field on October 5th from 11:00 till 16:00. Thanks to all that stopped to say hello at our Historical Society tent.
Visiting Dignitaries
Nice to have a visit from John and Angelika Weber who currently reside in New Mexico. Had a nice lunch with them on Sunday. They are doing well.
Me and Bobby McGee – Kris Kristofferson
I’ve been having some fun playing guitar using the app Chordify. It is a clever piece of software that analyzes YouTube music videos and produces a running display of the chord changes. I cannot read music and rely on song sheets with chord notations. The problem with these is that the chord changes are usually in the wrong location. I can usually “hear” where the change is supposed to occur but it is nice to get a visual cue, especially on instrumental tunes.
You probably know the song as performed by Janis Joplin, but Kris wrote it.
Kristoffer Kristofferson was an American country music singer, songwriter, and actor. He was a pioneering figure in the outlaw country movement of the 1970s, moving away from the polished Nashville sound and toward a more raw, introspective style. Wikipedia

I have removed AdSense advertising from my site. The ads were annoying and cluttered up the page. Also it only netted me a few pennies at day. However I have retained my affiliate sponsors and donations are always welcome. It does cost money to run this website. Thank you for your support.
