Last week of Summer

Summer came to a close on Sunday. It got cooler and some of the trees are showing some color. Amazingly I saw a hummingbird buzzing near the Morning Glory vines which are finally blooming. I paid a visit to see Chuck Anderson to pick up some Autumn Crocus bulbs. I wanted to add these to my garden as a unique fall flower.

The Silence of the Worms

I’ve been keeping Red Wriggler worms for decades. They chew up coffee grounds, melon rinds, avocado skins, egg shells and even paper. When they were most active you could actually HEAR them. However lately it has been quiet. Last week I started digging in the compost looking for living individuals and found none. The material was quite dry. I don’t pay much attention to this project, they have existed for years without much intervention and thrived but I’m afraid I had a major die-off. I’m in the process of emptying my “worm bag” and will probably bring this enterprise to a close. It was a successful run, but all things will eventually end. This is a photo taken in October 2009 in better times when the worms were thriving and active, Rest in peace dear friends.

I was pleased to receive Birthday greetings on Facebook, but there were too many to answer individually. I posted a group thank-you note to everyone. It was a great day which ran quite late because I stayed up to watch the Harris-Trump debate which was worth the wait.

Standby Generator Installation

The propane tanks came for the standby generator. They have been inspected and all things are ready for the first power-up which will occur on 27 September 2024. I’m excited.

Temple Harvest Fair

Temple, NH is one of the first towns to hold its annual Harvest Fair, My town, New Ipswich, NH is one of the last. It is a nice event and the chicken BBQ was delicious.

Saturday was a busy day. I stopped at the library to learn about reptiles and take some photos.

My friends at Mason Hollow Nursery held an end of season sale on Sunday. I stopped by to see that they had. I was most intrigued by the autumn crocus (actually a lily) varieties that were blooming in their demonstration garden.

Nancy Griffith – Boots of Spanish Leather

I’ve been having some fun playing guitar using the app Chordify. It is a clever piece of software that analyzes YouTube music videos and produces a running display of the chord changes. I cannot read music and rely on song sheets with chord notations. The problem with these is that the chord changes are usually in the wrong location. I can usually “hear” where the change is supposed to occur but it is nice to get a visual cue, especially on instrumental tunes.

I heard this cover of Bob Dylan’s song on an episode of “Resident Alien” on Netflix. The show features a lot of great music. Nancy Griffith does a great job with it. This was my favorite version. Fun to play it.

I have removed AdSense advertising from my site. The ads were annoying and cluttered up the page. Also it only netted me a few pennies at day. However I have retained my affiliate sponsors and donations are always welcome. It does cost money to run this website. Thank you for your support.
