Three Events

I can think of three news items that are seared into my memory. The first was the assassination of John F Kennedy which I learned of in the middle of a math class at Andrew Warde High School. The second was the attack on the Twin Towers which I watch from the cafeteria of Digital Equipment Corporation in Marlboro, MA. The third was the insurrection on January 6th which had started when I was driving home after picking up my mother from dialysis. By the time I got home I watched in horror as it unfolded.

In many ways the insurrection was the things that bothered me the most since it threatened the “peaceful transfer of power”. There was a mechanism to replace JFK. The Twin Towers was an act of war. I have been disappointed that the person that enabled that travesty has not faced legal action. Today the Supreme Court has made that even less possible with their partisan decision, I am incensed. I channeled my anger by grabbing a splitting maul and pounding away on some large oak logs that have been sittiing for several months. I also canceled my subscription to the New York Times for the editiorial mistakenly called for the wrong candidate to withdraw. One guy is old and the other is a felon who was just granted immunity for any “official” acts he might commit should we be foolish enough to vote him into office.

The wood splitting was therapy but it wasn’t the only one. I tackled the invasive Japanese Butterbur that had overtaken the cellar hole of our old house. I used a machete on the 5 foot stalks with the huge leaves. It looked like something out of a jungle movie. I was pleased to find that right in the center a Red Twig Dogwood had managed to establish itself. I hacked away at the giant leaves to give it more room and sunlight. Also I took some photos of the new blooms,

On this Day – July 1, 2008 (Tuesday)

For the “On This Day” section of my postings I depend on photos that I can accurately date. For the most part those would be photographs taken with a digital camera or phone. I only have about 20 years of digital photos a mere subset of the years I shot with film. So today I only found photos taken on July 1st in 2008. On my walk I encountered a killdeer nesting in a field. When she saw me she feigned having a broken wing to draw me away from the eggs. At that time I didn’t have a telephoto lens and probably got too close. These birds are a delight with their distinctive calls and flight patterns.
