This is the daily journal entry for the 22nd day of June in 2024. The Daily Picture Theme is #Couple. This photo was taken circa 1974 on a fishing trip with a co-worker in Cape Cod, He had a boat and we fished for what I believe were rock fish or black fish. As I remember they were very tasty. The photo fits the theme because we are a couple holding a couple of fish.

Rainy Saturday
It was a good day for choring around the house. After Hip-Hop class I got rid of expired herbal tea, flower and vegetable seeds. I mixed them all together and spread them on a semi-bare patch of ground where the logging had taken place. Maybe something might grow. I then tackled some of the items from my Mom’s estate and found some interesting items.
Hawaii overprint note
There was an envelope with a five dollar bill from 1934. However the word HAWAII was prominently printed on the front and back. This required some research.
After the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 by the Empire of Japan, U.S. military officials surmised that in the event of an invasion of Hawaii, the Imperial Japanese Armed Forces would have access to a considerable amount of United States dollars which could be seized from financial institutions or private individuals. Faced with this scenario, on January 10, 1942, Military Governor Delos Carleton Emmons issued an order to recall all dollars in circulation in Hawaii, save for set caps on how much money both individuals ($200) and businesses ($500; save extra currency for payroll purposes) could possess at any time.
On June 25, 1942, new overprinted notes were first issued. Series 1935A $1 silver certificate, Series 1934 $5 and $20 Federal Reserve Notes, and Series 1934A $5, $10, and $20 Federal Reserve Notes from the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco were issued with brown treasury seals and serial numbers. Overprints of the word HAWAII were made; two small overprints to the sides of the obverse of the note between the border and both the treasury seal and Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco seal, and large outlined hawaii lettering dominating the reverse. The purpose was that should there have been an Imperial Japanese invasion of the islands, the US government could immediately declare any Hawaii-printed notes worthless, due to their easy identification. With this issue, military officials prohibited the use of non-overprinted notes and ordered all Hawaii residents to turn in regular notes for Hawaii-overprinted notes by July 15, 1942.[4][5] Beginning on August 15, 1942, no other paper U.S. currency could be used except under special permission,

Curse of the Bambino
Imagine my surprise in finding the 1919 Agreement between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox for Babe Ruth in my Mother’s possessions. Why was this here? Mom was a Brooklyn Dodgers fan. I doubt is was from my Dad, he wasn’t much of a sports fan. This is not the original, that sold in auction for twice what the Yankees paid for Babe Ruth. On the document is an embossed seal from the Feinstein Foundation Inc,, Rhode Island dated 1991. Just another curio in a box.

Cactus Flowers
One does not usually associate New Hampshire as a place to grow Cactus, but in 2004 I ordered some high altitude cacti from a mail order outfit called Intermountain Cactus located in Kaysville, Utah. They were able to withstand our New Hampshire winters. I grew them in a raised bed “sandbox”. On this day in 2008 they were in bloom. The cactus are still there but they get crowded out by other more aggressive and fast growing plants and weeds. Weeding around them is hazardous, the spines can easily penetrate leather gloves .
