“The private contemplation that journaling provides gives us a place to examine what life really means to us … It receives the mood we’re in and preserves it for us to look at and learn from … Every time we chronicle our thoughts and activities, we are verifying our existence.”

Dahlia planting

Another beautiful day in New Ipswich. It was a cool morning in the 40s (F) but quickly warmed up into the 70s. I was determined to get those Dahlia bulbs planted after going to the effort of wintering them over in wood shavings. Last year I planted them in large plastic pots molded to look like half whiskey barrels. There are a couple of issues with this method. First you need to find soil to fill the buckets. I actually bought some bags from the garden center. I think it is silly to buy dirt when you have 5 acres of it, but at least you don’t have to dig it up and sift out the roots, rocks and weeds. The second problem is the pots dry out really quickly from baking in the sun.

This year I’m depending on two of my new EGO battery tools. I have their weed whacker and rotortiller. The tiller is small and is similar to the Mantis gas tiller. However unlike the Mantis I don’t spend most of my time trying to start it. My strategy for planting the tubers is simple, use the whacker to get the grass down to the lowest level, loosen the soil by hand with a garden fork and pulverize the soil with the tiller. Granted there are bits and pieces of witchgrass, but it is easy to plant a clump of tubers in the soft dirt. There are a number of odd single tubers left which I will pot up for the Children’s Fair.

Flowers Everywhere

The Chinese Fringe Tree, Kousa Dogwood and Black locust trees are flowering. The Miss Kim Lilac is in full bloom and the fragrance is overpowering, intoxicating. I also saw that the pitcher plants are blooming as well as the first zinnia bloom.

Chordify

I received a promo for Chordify Prime, a music application. It is quite useful. If you select a YouTube song it discerns the key and provide a running ticker of the chord changes. Perfect for playing along with tunes. I’m providing an example below, but it may be blocked if you are using uBlock or other ad blocking applications.

I think this will be of most use to me when I play along with instrumental fiddle tunes. Sadly I can’t read music but most of the time I can anticipate the change. The AI magic might be a nice aid for timing.

Ravens?

I was reading on the deck this afternoon enjoying the lilac scent listening to the birds and noisy crows. Amidst the cacophony I heard the clickiing of a raven, Could it be that I’ll get one as a visitor. They are most welcome to live here. I have plenty of peanuts and will be only too happy to provide whatever ravens find appetizing.
