The Daily Picture Theme has returned from hiatus with the theme #Curl. My featured photo is that of the curled leaves of a Cycad, a houseplant I’ve had for many years. That photo was taken in February of 2009. However I cannot leave this theme without including a photo of myself when I was able to grow curls. This is an analog photo which is undated. I’m guessing it was taken in the early 1980s. I was letting my freak flag fly after those Navy years with the required buzz cut. Check out these curls.

You come on big when you're feeling small
You come home straight and you come home curly
Sometimes you don't come home at all

Daily Journal – 16 May 2024 (Thursday)

“Journal writing is a voyage to the interior.”

— Christina Baldwin

More rain today, mild temperatures. It is greening out all over. The azaleas will be blooming soon. The air is fragrant with the scent of the lilacs. Tuesday and Thursday are my yoga classes at Willow Tree Studios in New Ipswich. It is actually a bit more than just yoga. We do some core exercises such as the dreaded crunches, balance exercises and some work with weights. Karen does a great job as the instructor.

Houseplants

It is still too early to move the houseplants outside for the summer. Our frost-free date is June 1st, but some plants can get a head start. I’ve already taken out my Rosemary plants and they are doing just fine. Today I took out the Prickily Pear (Opuntia) and the Camellia. I’ve taken pads from the Opuntia and had them winter over. The biggest problem will be keeping them from getting a sunburn.

Musings

If journal writing is a voyage to the interior, this really will be a long strange trip for me. I’m still working out what to include in my daily offerings. I do have a bit of a formula in place. There are three sections. First a photo or photos to capture the daily picture theme that is posted on the social site Spoutible. Second is a Journal entry in the style of James Roger (check out the Historical Society Substack). James would always write about the weather, his chores and his correspondences. The third section is a bit of time travel, a look back at photos taken on the same date but different year. Remarkably the same photos appear again and again. Joni Mitchell was right, it is all The Circle Game.

On This Date

On this date (May 16th) in 2017 I was walking on the Rail Trail in New Boston, as well as taking photos of some of the town landmarks. It is such an nice town.
