November 29, 2023 (Wednesday)
It is an auspicious start to the day when you awake with a John Prine tune in your head. However my dreams have been a little dark lately, probably thinking too much about the wars and the rise of Fascism. Watching the news has not a healthy enterprise.
It was a cold start this morning, only 19 degrees. When I glanced out the window early in the morning I thought we had a dusting of snow, but it was just that the moon lit up the yard,
Hunting Jackrabbits
The New Ipswich Congregational Church hosts a Senior Fellowship and Lunch from 10:30 till 12:30 every Wednesday. Today Lance DePlante told quite a tale. Lance is a retired Army Colonel who served in the Special Forces in Vietnam. He was a pilot. He told a story about the time he was stationed in San Antonio had to make flights for President Johnson and Ladybird. Johnson told him he wanted to hunt jackrabbits on his ranch. The Secret Service didn’t think this was a good idea but Johnson explained that as President he could anything he damn well pleases. Johnson got his way.
The hunt took place with Johnson harnessed in a Huey with the door open blasting away with a .44 Magnum. Of course he couldn’t hit anything, and Lance was worried he might take out a rotor. This is one of the stories that you really need to hear from Lance. This is only a summation. I’m looking forward to next week.
The Birds
When I glanced out the window this afternoon I saw a huge swarm of black birds nest in the tree and taken off in unison. They scattered fairly quickly when I went out with the camera. They were mostly likely European Starlings. I noticed several postings about the “birds” in our town’s Facebook group, so I assume they touched down all over town. Too bad that they are such pests, it was a sight to see.
Having a Drink
I am so happy that I put out the defroster in the bird bath. It never got about freezing all day and the birds were so pleased to have drinking water.
Christmas Cactus
I have quite collection of what is commonly called Christmas Cactus, mostly pinks and reds with a few off whites. As the days get cooler and shorter they set blossoms and start blooming from Thanksgiving till Christmas. This a bleak time of year and seeing blossoms is a real treat.
Daily Picture Theme – #Wide
I participate in a daily picture challenge on the social media site Spoutible. Everyday there is a different subject announced as a Daily Picture Theme. I select an appropriate  photo from my collection to share. I have been sharing these exclusively on Improves With Age, my Substack newsletter. However since I have untaken the task of writing daily entries, I decided to introduce a daily picture theme photo to this website.
The theme for November 28, 2023 was #Wide. I chose a few photos taken in 1972 as we drove through “Big Sky” country in Montana and Wyoming.
