November 23, 2023 (Thursday)
Happy Thanksgiving leftovers. That is what we are having for dinner. We had a nice dinner yesterday with the family at my son’s house. We arrived early in the morning to stuff the turkey and get it into the oven. We never can accurately guess the timing on this, better sooner than later. It was also a Thanksgiving feast for the local birds that visit the feeders. My son served them a large helping of peanuts (unsalted) which disappeared in a manner of minutes.

The Singularity and other topics
We don’t have discussions about politics around the dinner table, we know how badly that might go, however I did have an interesting conversation with my Mom’s caretaker about UFOs, ghosts and The Singularity, the moment when machine intelligence will surpass that of humans. It was an interesting conversation especially because my son has been showing me the capabilities of AI to generate photo realistic people and landscapes.
My nephew is a mechanic engineer who designs guns. He brought along some recent acquisitions to show to his Grandma. Somehow this tableau does not fit into the Hallmark version of Thanksgiving that you might imagine. A large caliber revolver is not your usual Thanksgiving centerpiece.

Daily Picture Theme – Swim (Yesterday)
I participate in a daily photo challenge on the social media site Spoutible. Everyday there is a different subject announced as a Daily Picture Theme. I select an appropriate photo from my collection to share. I have been sharing these exclusively on Improves With Age, my Substack newsletter. However since I have untaken the task of writing (mostly) daily entries, I decided to introduce a daily picture theme photo to this website.
The theme listed for November 23, 2023 is SWIM. I didn’t get the opportunity to post anything yesterday, I was in a bit of a turkey torpor, so this is a catch up. This is an analog photo taken in the 1970s at my Uncle Ed’s pool in Stamford, CT. It features my wife Ginny and Roger Brink. The photo was taken with my Nikonos underwater camera which was a nightmare to operate. Eventually the seals failed and it leaked, but I did get a few shots like this.

Yes, Roger underwater at Ed’s Pool. There was quite a crowd at that party.
