I’ve lived in New Ipswich for over 48 years and I don’t remember the temperature ever going below -10 degrees Fahrenheit. It was a bit of surprise to wake on Saturday morning to see that the temperature was hovering at a chilly -17 degrees. I had no reason to go outside other than fill the bird feeders. Thankfully there was very little wind and the house was quite comfortable with heat from the wood stove and gallons of fuel oil.

My bird bath defroster was able to work in spite of the frigid air. The birds were grateful to find water to drink.

The birds puffed up their feathers for insulation, becoming almost completely round. The average internal temperature for birds is 105 degrees Fahrenheit. This means that these birds are able to maintain a 122 degree higher temperature than surrounding air. That requires a lot of bird seed. Amazing isn’t it?

Thankfully this was a short-lived event. Today temperatures are predicted to be in the 40s which will feel balmy. At this time of year the sun has some warmth and Spring is less than two months away. Stay warm.
