The Frog in the Woods

New Hampshire is the Granite State. We have a fascination with rocks that look like people or things. The Old Man in the Mountain was a big tourist draw until it collapsed on May 3, 2003.  At the end it was wired to the cliff which I thought was rather pathetic.

However in New Boston, NH there is a rock that looks like a bullfrog. I’ve been wanting to see it for many years and recently my sister and I went on an adventure.

You’ll Need Directions

There is no signage for this famous granite amphibian. But I printed out the directions provided by the New Boston Historical Society. You can access them  by clicking on this link.

It is a fairly short hike to the frog and well worth the effort.

Signposts

You’ll know you are in the right place when you see the sign for Townes Memorial Forest.

Success

Proceed past this sign until you see a path on the right. It is almost solid granite covered with moss. That will take you to the frog.

My sister stood next to it for a perspective of size.

But, it is an illusion

If you walk around the rock, the illusion disappears, it becomes just another glacial erratic in the woods. But in the 1900s people staying in the grand hotels would come here to picnic and admire the frog.
