The Throwback Photos Project

I’ve been taking photos for over sixty years. As one might imagine I’ve lost track of what is in that collection. I’ve decided that it would interesting to take another look at photos taken one, five and ten years ago. If anything is interesting, I could repost it or add some commentary. This collection was taken when we stayed with my cousin and her husband on Bell Island in Mid-September in 2011.

Bell Island

Bell Island is located in Norwalk, CT in the Long Island Sound. It was named after Harmon H. Bell who purchased the land in 1852. My cousin and her husband built a retirement home there on a small plot of land owned by her parents.

My cousin’s home is modest but the island has a number of homes that can only be described as palatial. These large houses block the view of the water, but thankfully there are two nice beaches and a small park that offers a 270 degree view of the Long Island Sound.

There are two teak benches at the park. I took this photo of my Cousin Andee, her husband Steve and my wife Ginny.

The other bench at the park faces New York City. The skyline can be seen on a clear day. On September 11, 2001, the smoke from the burning towers was visible from this  spot.

Landscaping

Space is at a premium but every niche has a flower pot or vine. It is all very quaint.

Walkabout

I took a walk to see the various palaces packed into such a small place. A Google review of Bell Island stated that it was the home of the rich and not so famous and that seemed to be an apt description. However I was most intrigued by an artistic mailbox and an nice conversation with a landscape artist.

Hurricane Irene

Hurricane Irene arrived about two weeks before our visit. My cousin prepared by placing her piano and furniture on blocks. The water did not raise up above the first floor but it came close. They sent this photo.
