Birds

The weather has turned colder and wetter during the final week of October. We are past our frost free date but still haven’t had a hard killing frost. However the tomatoes and flowers have given up for the season. I dug up the dahlia tubers, added the zinnias to the compost heap and brought in the houseplants.

This is the time of year I concentrate on watching nature from the comfort of the house. I added another bird feeder near the window of our mud room which gives me a great place to take photographs. It didn’t take long for the chickadees, tufted titmouse and nuthatches to discover it.

The feeder is located in the corner of the garage and the house which offers the birds limited visibility. They tend to be wary of their situation and keep looking skyward for any signs of danger. This bird took it to extremes.

Blossoms

I still had blossoms on my Zinnias and Morning Glories but they were damaged by frost. I have a Cleome that is still blooming and I’m keeping that around to harvest the seed pods for next year. It was a great year for the Dahlias and Zinnias.

I have too many houseplants. It is a result of years of collection. I don’t discard them because they are living things. They have a summer vacation outside in the shade of a hemlock tree. In fall I bring them in and struggle with ones that have grown in size and weight. I usually get stabbed by some of the nastier cactus. This year I was immediately rewarded with a fresh Camellia blossom.

Ballots

I’ve been waiting four years to cast a vote to protect our country. It only took me a few minutes to mark my ballot for each of the Democratic candidates.

I voted for competence, civility, empathy and patriotism. I want a President and Vice President which will restore our reputation as a fair and just nation.

I reject the cruelty of separation of separating children from their parents, the embrace of racism, the nepotism and corruption, the denigration of my military service and the rejection of science.

I had the opportunity to see and meet many of the Presidential Candidates in the last two years. I even attended a Trump rally in the Pre-Covid times. The choice is clear: Biden/Harris 2020.
