Lula Wiles is a trio made up of Isa Burke, Eleanor “Ellie” Buckland & Mali Obomsawin. They met at a fiddle camp in Maine when they were quite young and would trade fiddle tunes and folk songs. Later in Boston at Berklee School of Music they formed the group called Lula Wiles, a name based upon the Carter Family song Lula Walls.
The trio performed as part of the Currier Art Museum Side Door Music Series in Manchester, NH. They sang songs from their latest CD, What We Do which will be released on January 25, 2019. The trio has been on tour for some time, but seem to still enjoy each others company as evidenced when they had a moment for a good laugh between sets.
I was invited to the concert by Angelika Weber who is Ellie Buckland’s aunt. She had two tickets but her husband was traveling on business and her friend was getting a hip replacement. I was her last choice. Ellie was very happy to see her aunt before the show.
I had met Ellie in 2009 when she played fiddle with her Dad’s band at a graduation party held in New Ipswich, NH. I assume at this point she was still attending the fiddle camps in Maine.
In 2016 Lula Wiles started a Kickstarter fund to produce their first album. As a premium for a generous donation provided by john & Angelika Weber, they performed a concert in the garage in New Ipswich, NH.
