The New Ipswich Photo Club meets at Library on the second Wednesday at 6 PM. Each month we choose a photo theme and review our shots at the meeting. One member shared that in a dream she had asked me what the photo theme was for the month and I had responded “gates”.
A gate marks an entrance from one landscape into another. In many cases a garden gate stands alone without a wall. When you pass through it, you enter a new space of flowers and growing things.
Gates have always been a favorite subject for me. I was surprised at how many photos I had taken during my Navy service.
In some cases a gate can be protective. When I took this photo the dogs and their owner were not interested in making friends.
I’ve seen some interesting gates in New Hampshire, including a decorative iron gate at the Yankee Siege Trebuchet site in Greenfield, NH.
The entrance gate of the Andres Institute of Art in Brookline, NH is a whimsical sculpture named “Dream Catcher”.
Sometimes a gate is metaphorical, a transition away from one state to another. The Freedom Fellowship church in New Ipswich helps men and women recover from addiction to drugs or alcohol.
